A big loss for both the African and the global communities. Alan was one of those quiet but loaded knowledge powerhouses. I have known and worked with Alan since 1996. He is a deep believer in an Internet technology that is agnostic of political and social considerations. He was instrumental in the creation of AFRINIC, building critical bridges that helped us in the early days, and has remained a strong supporter of AFRINIC, a technology river that irrigates the whole continent. I kept a very positive and constructive relationship with him all those years, including since he joined the ICANN Board.
